What
is dandruff?
Dandruff is a condition of upper
skin layer of the scalp where there are excessive shedding dead skin cells.
Naturally there will be shedding
of the skin cells from every parts of the body after a period of time. When
there is excessive shedding of scalp dead cells with itching, it is called as
dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis. Sometimes it can be seen on eyebrows or
along the sides of the nose.
It is normal for these to be shed
or rubbed off because the body is constantly producing new cells that simply
move up to replace older ones.
Dandruff is primarily an
aesthetic problem, which many people find unattractive or embarrassing.
Dandruff is a common scalp
disorder affecting almost half of the population at the pre-pubertal age and of
any gender and ethnicity. No population in any
geographical region would have passed through freely without being affected by
dandruff at some stage in their life.
What
causes Dandruff?
The exact cause for this is not
known.
A fungus group named Malassezia
yeasts is one of the reason foe itchy scalp.
Excessive sweating and unhygienic
situations make the condition worse.
Dandruff can also be a
manifestation of an allergic reaction to chemicals in hair gels, sprays, and
shampoos, hair oils.
Seborrheic dermatitis is not
contagious or related to diet, but it may be aggravated by illness,
psychological stress, fatigue, change of season and reduced general health.
Symptoms
of Dandruff
The hallmark sign of dandruff, or
seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp, is white flakes on the scalp and in the
hair.

Head may feel tight and itchy

How is
Dandruff treated?
Antidandruff shampooing can help
in some cases. Olive oil and coconut oil can help you to moisturize your scalp.
It is not so easy to treat
dandruff. Dandruff will not harm you or your scalp at all

Olive
oil
The problem of scalp dryness can
be cured with olive oil which is a good moisturizer. With regular use of extra
virgin olive you can keep your scalp away from drying and flaking. Simply heat
up some extra virgin olive oil until it is slightly warm. Then use this warm
oil to massage your scalp and then wrap a towel around your head for half an
hour.
Lemon
Lemon contains acids which can
get rid of yeast causing dandruff. For treating dandruff, take fresh lemon
juice and use it to massage your scalp. Leave it for a few minutes and then
wash your hair with a shampoo followed by a conditioner.
Aloe
Vera
Aloe Vera has got healing,
antibacterial and antifungal properties that can help in controlling dandruff.
Take some fresh aloe vera juice or aloe vera gel and apply it to your hair just
a few minutes before taking a shower.
Coal
Tar
Coal tar is a keratoplastic
causing the skin to shed dead cells from the top layer and slow skin cell
growth.
Neem
Neem has anti-fungal properties
that can be effective in treating dandruff.
Black
Pepper
Black pepper contains the
dandruff fighting minerals zinc and selenium. In Indian traditional Ayurveda,
powdered black pepper has been used to treat dandruff.
