Dengue fever | Cause, Symptoms, Diagnosis, Prevention& Homeopathy
Dengue
fever or breakbone fever is an infectious mosquito-borne disease caused by
dengue virus characterized by body pain, retroorbital pain and high fever.
Globally, 2.5-3
billion individuals live in approximately 112 countries that experience dengue
transmission. Annually, approximately 50-100 million individuals are
infected.
What cause dengue?
Dengue is spread
by a type of infected mosquito called the Aedes aegypti mosquito. The mosquito
bites throughout the day and night.
Transmission of the dengue virus
happens in a cycle. An infected human is bitten by a mosquito, the infected
mosquito then bites another human, and the cycle continues
There are four different strains
of the dengue virus: DEN 1, DEN 2, DEN 3 and DEN 4
If you are infected by a strain
of dengue virus, you will get a lifelong immunity for that particular strain of
DEN virus.
If you are re-infected with
another strain of DEN virus, you may have chances of more serious illness.
Dengue cannot spread one person
to another.
Factors believed to be
responsible for the spread of dengue include the following:
- Explosive population growth
- Unplanned urban overpopulation with inadequate public health systems
- Poor control of standing water and vectors
- Viral evolution
- Increased international recreational, business, and military travel to endemic areas
Signs and symptoms of
Dengue
Initial Dengue infection may be
asymptomatic.
Classic Dengue is identified by
·
A high body temperature
·
Retro orbital pain (Pain in the back of eyes)
·
Head ache
·
Diffuse muscle pain
·
Diffuse bone pain
·
Weakness
·
Sore throat
·
Centrifugal maculopapular rash
·
Vomiting
A small percentage of people who
have been infected before may develop hemorrhage.
·
Bleeding from gums
·
Blood in stool ( Black coloured stool)
·
Red spots on skin
And this is
called as Dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF). Rarely it get complicated and leads
to thrombocytopenia (reduction in the platelet count in blood) which can cause
severe bleeding and finally end up in dengue shock syndrome
How
dengue is diagnosed?
Your doctor can
diagnose dengue by virus or blood tests
Laboratory
criteria for diagnosis include one or more of the following:
- Isolation of the dengue virus from serum, plasma, leukocytes, or autopsy samples
- Demonstration of a fourfold or greater change in reciprocal immunoglobulin G (IgG) or immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibody titers to one or more dengue virus antigens in paired serum samples
- Demonstration of dengue virus antigen in autopsy tissue via immunohistochemistry or immunofluorescence or in serum samples via enzyme immunoassay (EIA)
- Detection of viral genomic sequences in autopsy tissue, serum, or cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) samples via polymerase chain reaction (PCR)
How
can we prevent Dengue fever?
Get away from
mosquitoes is the first thing to prevent Dengue.
To reduce the mosquitoes,
eliminate the places where they lay their eggs.
Clean water
containers
Dry the
artificial containers which hold the water in and around home.
